Thermopile sensors operate by generating a small thermoelectric voltage proportional to the detected radiation. They can be used to determine surface temperatures or to measure the concentration of certain gases, like CO2, CO, N2O, hydrocarbons or anesthetics, according to the principles of Beer's law and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) spectroscopy.
